Paul van Dyk is taking acid back to the machines.
The trance icon will debut a new live performance concept, “The Essence of Acid,” at Dreamstate SoCal 2026, bringing a hardware-driven production built around one of electronic music’s most enduring sounds to the Queen Mary Waterfront in Long Beach, California.
Scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21, the performance will mark the worldwide debut of The Essence of Acid and serve as the launch point for a forthcoming world tour. Rather than approaching the concept as a conventional DJ set, Paul van Dyk will perform with the electronic hardware that shapes its sound, putting live production at the center of the experience.
The setup will combine exclusive new music and acid-focused compositions with live reinterpretations of selections from van Dyk’s catalog. Familiar records will also be rebuilt specifically for the show, giving the German producer room to revisit his body of work through a different technical and creative framework.
That distinction matters for an artist whose career has developed alongside the evolution of electronic music technology. The Essence of Acid is designed around the physical tools of electronic production, with synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers, and effects sharing the stage rather than remaining hidden behind the finished records.
At the heart of the concept is the unmistakable sound of the Roland TB-303, the bass synthesizer that became foundational to acid house and later left its fingerprints across techno, trance, and other corners of dance music.
Van Dyk will perform using the Boutique Series, a collection based on the iconic TB-303, TR-808, and TR-909. Those machines also inform The Essence of Acid’s visual identity. The show’s visual language will incorporate circuitry, oscilloscopes, waveforms, and other imagery associated with analog electronic production.
Rather than serving as a backdrop, the production will evolve with the music. Screens, lighting, lasers, and other stage elements will develop alongside the performance, extending the hardware-focused approach beyond the sound itself.
That makes Dreamstate SoCal an especially fitting location for the concept’s first public appearance.
Created by global dance music event producer Insomniac, Dreamstate has built its identity around trance’s history, evolution, and future. The festival has long served as a meeting point between the genre’s foundational artists and its newer movements, making The Essence of Acid’s exploration of an influential electronic sound closely aligned with the event’s broader philosophy.
The performance also adds another chapter to Paul van Dyk’s history with Dreamstate. His relationship with the festival stretches back to its inaugural edition in 2015, when he performed at the first Dreamstate SoCal. More than a decade later, he will return with a production that looks backward at the technology that helped shape electronic music while using it as the foundation for something new.
Acid itself is not new territory for Paul van Dyk.
Across a career spanning more than three decades, he has incorporated the style into his catalog through releases including “Acid,” his collaboration with Chicago house pioneer DJ Pierre, as well as “ACID TRAXXX” and the solo track “Filthy Acid.” The Essence of Acid builds on that relationship by moving the sound from individual studio productions into a dedicated live format.
For trance fans, the project also offers a different perspective on an artist closely associated with the genre’s global rise. Van Dyk has spent decades moving between studio production and international stages, building a catalog that has reached multiple generations of electronic music listeners. The new concept puts the production process itself under the spotlight, reconnecting contemporary festival spectacle with the machines and methods behind the music.
Dreamstate SoCal 2026 takes place Friday, Nov. 20, and Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Queen Mary Waterfront in Long Beach. Two-day and single-day general admission tickets, along with 21-and-over VIP options, are on sale now.
When Paul van Dyk takes the stage Saturday, however, the focus will be less on nostalgia than transformation. The Essence of Acid draws from a sound with deep roots in dance music history, then places those roots inside a modern live environment.
For its worldwide debut at Dreamstate SoCal, the machines aren’t merely part of the process. They’re part of the performance.
